Basic information:

  • Area: 36,188 km²
  • Location: island located at the western end of the Pacific Ocean between the South China Sea and the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait being 160 km wide.
  • Extreme points: north 25°20′N, south 21°50′N, west 120°00′E east 122°00′E. Length and width of the island: 395 km and 144 km.
  • Taiwan: bordered through the territorial waters of the Taiwan Strait by China to the west and the Philippines to the south.
  • Coastline: 1566 km
  • Country: Republic of China (Taiwan) – hereafter referred to as Taiwan – 17 counties and 6 cities
  • Population: over 23.6 million (population density 655 persons/km2)
  • Capital city: Taipei, which is, together with its adjacencies, the largest urban area on the island. The city of Taipei has a population of approximately 2.6 million. However, the entire agglomeration (comprising Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung) has more than 7 million inhabitants (about 30% of the country’s population)
  • Other cities: Taichung (2.81 million), Kaohsiung (2.77 million), and Tainan (1.89 million).
  • Language: the official language is Mandarin, spoken by 80% of the population.
  • Climatic conditions: humid tropical. The warmest month is usually July, with an average temperature (in Taipei) of around 28.5˚C, while the coldest month is February, with an average of around 15˚C. The driest month is November, when the average rainfall is below 100 mm. The highest rainfall is during the summer months (when Taiwan is also hit by typhoons).
  • Time zone: UTC + 8
  • Date: there are two calendars in Taiwan̨. The Gregorian calendar (used in Poland) and the calendar of the Republic of China, reckoned since 1911, hence e.g. 2022 is the 111th year of the Republic of China.
  • Religion: more than 81% of Taiwan’s population consider themselves to be of some faith. The religions with the highest number of adherents are Buddhism (35.1%) and Taoism (33%). The next religions are I-Kuan Tao /Yiguandao/ – a syncretic Religion of Omnipresent Truth founded in the 17th century (3.5%), Protestantism (2.6%) and Catholicism (1.3%).
  • Currency: Taiwan dollar (TWD, NT$, NTD). According to the exchange rate of the National Bank of Poland on 04 May 2022, the value of́ one new Taiwan dollar was PLN 0.1504.

From 2012 to 2022, beef consumption in Taiwan reached values between 117,000 and 197,000 tonnes per year, with consumption expected to reach 192,000 tonnes in 2022. The consumption growth rate (year-on-year) during the period described ranged from -10.0% (2012) to +13.87% (2016).

Beef consumption in Taiwan is increasing from 2012 to 2022 and is almost 24 times higher than domestic production.

Beef market (exports and imports):

From 2012 to 2022, Taiwan’s beef exports to other markets were basically non-existent, if they did occur the export value was no more than 1,000 tonnes (e.g. from 2019 to 2022). Imports between 2012 and 2022 ranged in value from 112,000 tonnes (2012) to 190,000 tonnes (2020).

Beef imports to Taiwan between 2012 and 2022 show an increase due to increased consumption and low domestic production.
